An expandable hose like the Pocket Hose Copper is a joy to use: light, compact and kink-free. To keep it that way, think of care in seasons — a few minutes at the right time prevents most leaks.
Spring: setup
1Inspect the washerReplace the rubber washer in the connector if it's flat, cracked or missing.
2Check the jacketLook along the fabric cover for fraying or thin spots.
3Attach by handTighten the copper fitting by hand only — no tools.
Summer: everyday use
4Ease the water onOpen the spigot gradually so the hose expands evenly.
5Avoid sharp surfacesDon't drag it across rough concrete, edging or thorny plants.
6Drain after wateringTurn off the spigot, then open the nozzle to let it empty and shrink.
7Keep it shadedHeat and sunlight age the inner tube faster.
Fall: tune-up
- Soak the nozzle in warm water and white vinegar (half and half) to clear mineral buildup.
- Test the shut-off valve for a full seal.
Winter: storage
- Drain completely before temperatures drop below freezing.
- Store indoors, loosely coiled, away from heaters.
The one rule to remember: don't leave the hose pressurized with the nozzle closed and the water on.
If the hose bulges or expands unevenly, stop using it and inspect it before the next use.
